How mediation works
- Free initial call. Tell us what needs to be resolved, whether a case has been filed, and who else is involved. We confirm that mediation fits and explain the process and fees.
- Preparation. We send a checklist of documents and information. Good preparation is what makes a single session productive.
- The session. In person in Huntersville or Locust, or by secure video. Parties may be in the same room or in separate rooms, whichever works better.
- The agreement. Terms are written down and signed before anyone leaves, then finalized in the form your case requires.
Common questions
What is divorce mediation?
Divorce mediation is a voluntary process in which a neutral mediator helps spouses communicate and reach agreements on property division, custody, support, and debt without asking a judge to decide. It is private, usually faster and less expensive than litigation, and it encourages cooperation, which matters most when children are involved.
How do I prepare?
It depends on the issues. Financial mediations usually require exchanging statements for accounts, debts, and income. Custody mediations work best when each parent has thought about the schedule that actually fits work, school, and activities. We provide a checklist before the session.
How long does it take?
Many mediations are finished in one session of about a half day. Complex property cases or multi-party civil disputes may take a full day or a second session. That is still far faster than a contested case, which can take many months to reach a final hearing.
