How mediation fits a Mecklenburg County case
- Before filing. Couples and businesses can mediate before any lawsuit, often resolving everything with a signed agreement and avoiding court entirely.
- Custody filed in district court. Contested custody cases are generally referred to the court’s free custody mediation program unless mediation is waived. Parents who prefer a private mediator who can also address support and property can ask the court about that option.
- Equitable distribution and alimony. The court can order a mediated settlement conference under the Family Financial Settlement program. Parties may select a certified family financial mediator such as Christopher Adkins.
- Superior court civil cases. Most civil actions require a mediated settlement conference before trial, with a mediator selected by the parties or appointed by the court.
Why Charlotte clients work with us
Christopher Adkins served more than six years as a Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police officer before founding Adkins Law, PLLC, and he has represented clients in hundreds of family and civil matters. As a mediator, that background translates into calm, structured sessions and realistic conversations about how a Mecklenburg judge might view a contested issue, while the decisions stay with the parties. He is certified by the North Carolina Dispute Resolution Commission for superior court, family financial, and clerk mediations, and certified in South Carolina for family and circuit court, which helps families who commute between Charlotte and York County.
